Can I change my Wix template?

Short answer

No. Wix’s Help Center says you can’t switch to a different template for a site you’ve already created, even one with no content yet. You have two options: start a new site with the template you want, then move your plan and domain to it, or keep the site you have and change its look with the Site Design panel and new sections. The second leaves your contacts, site history and settings untouched.

What Wix’s documentation says

Wix’s article on switching your site template puts it plainly: “While it’s not possible to switch to a different template for a site you already created, you can create as many sites as you want in your account.”

A Wix feature request page adds that this holds even if you haven’t added any content or elements. The switching article covers templates for both the Wix Editor and the Studio Editor, and its FAQ says a site can’t move between those two editors either.

Option one: a new site from a new template

Wix’s switching guide and its guide to getting a new template give these steps for starting over.

  1. Choose the new template

Pick one from Wix’s template library and open it in the editor. Your current site stays active until you delete it.

  2. Copy what you can

In the Wix Editor you can copy elements and whole pages from the old site into the new one. Third-party apps, headers and footers, Wix business apps such as Stores or Bookings, datasets and collections, code, and the Wix Pro Gallery won’t copy.

  3. Bring over your photos

Media from the old site sits in the Site Files folder of the Media Manager, which every site in your account can open.

  4. Move the plan and the domain

Reassign your Premium plan to the new site, then assign your domain to it once you’ve published the new site.

What stays behind matters too. Wix says you can’t transfer the site theme and layout, premium apps, contacts, site members, Wix Inbox messages, Wix Invoices or email marketing to another site.

Note

Wix also warns that a new template can affect your SEO. If you move your domain to the new site, it says to set up 301 redirects for the old pages to keep your rankings, using the URL Redirect Manager.

Option two: change the look inside your current site

If you only want a new look, the Site Design panel is where you choose the site’s color and text theme and change page backgrounds. Sections come in pre-designed options with layouts and elements that you fill with your own photos and words.

To rebuild the home page without changing the page visitors see, duplicate it in the Pages & Menu panel, rebuild the copy, then set the copy as your homepage when it’s ready. Wix’s page settings cover both steps, and redoing your Wix website walks through the whole job safely.

Which option fits

New site from a templateRebuild inside your site
Your pages and textCopied across by handStay in place
Contacts, members, inbox, invoicesStay with the old siteStay with the site
Plan and domainReassigned to the new siteNo change
Page addressesMay change, so plan 301 redirectsStay the same unless you change them
UndoThe old site stays until you delete itSite History restores saved versions

If the site works and the problem is how the pages look and read, the second route costs less and puts less at risk.

How Katsa does it on Wix

Katsa takes the second route. We rebuild your home page inside your existing Wix site, in your own account, from the photos and facts already on it, and you see the finished page on your site before it goes live and before you pay.

The Wix page covers the Wix details: access, what stays and how to undo.

Questions

Will a new template hurt my Google rankings?

It can. Wix says a new template can affect your SEO, and if you move your domain to a new site it tells you to set up 301 redirects from the old pages.

What happens to my old site if I start a new one?

Wix says it stays active unless you delete it, so you can keep it open as a reference while you copy content across.

Can I switch my site between the Wix Editor and the Studio Editor?

No. Wix says the two editors are separate platforms, so using the Studio Editor means creating a new site in it.
