How do you make a phone number clickable on a website?

Short answer

Turn the number into a link whose address starts with tel:, followed by a plus sign, the country code and the number, such as tel:+13035550142. Wix, Squarespace and Duda have a phone option in their link settings; in WordPress and Elementor you type tel: and the number into the link field. Then open your live site on a phone, tap the number and check that the dialer opens with it.

A clickable phone number is an ordinary link whose address uses tel: instead of https://. The tel: standard writes a full number with a plus sign and the country code, and Google’s web.dev guide to click to call says to always use that international format.

Link addressWhat a tap does
tel:+13035550142Opens the dialer with (303) 555-0142 filled in; most phones ask before they call
sms:+13035550142Opens a new text message to the same number

Clients see the number written the way they’d say it, and the link holds the plus sign and the digits. Dashes in the link are optional: the standard ignores them when placing a call, and Elementor’s instructions ask for none, so leaving them out is the simplest choice.

An sms: link, defined in RFC 5724, opens a text instead of a call. web.dev notes that browser support for sms: is less consistent than for tel:, so add one only beside a call link, and only if someone answers texts on that number.

Some phones link a plain-text number on their own: Safari on iOS detects anything formatted like a phone number by default. That depends on the phone, the browser and how your site writes the number, while a tel: link doesn’t depend on detection at all, which is why web.dev says to wrap every number in one.

28%

of the builder and remodeler sites we reviewed that show a phone number have no tel: link on a phoneKatsa’s review of builder websites

That share comes from Katsa’s review of 171 builder and remodeler websites, read on October 30, 2026. It counts only sites that show a phone number, and a phone may still detect some of those numbers on its own.

Wix

In the Wix Editor, a number you type into a text box becomes clickable on its own, with no link to add. Wix sets a few conditions for that:

  • The number has at least 7 digits and includes the country and area code; Wix notes that a number without its country code works locally but not for callers abroad.
  • Nothing else shares that text box, not even “Tel:”, so put any label in a separate box.
  • The whole number uses one font and one color.
  • Only plus signs, hyphens, spaces, periods and parentheses go in with the digits, and a plus sign only at the start.

To make a button call you, click it in the editor, click the Link icon, choose Phone number as the link type, enter your number and click Done. On a phone or tablet the button starts a call; on a computer it opens a calling app such as FaceTime.

In the Studio Editor, select a text element and click the Link icon, and its link options include a phone number. Either way, Wix links don’t work inside the editor, so publish before you test.

On your mobile site you can also connect the number to a Quick Action Bar. You add the bar from Mobile Tools in the mobile editor, then choose its actions with Set Up Quick Actions.

Squarespace

Squarespace’s link editor has a Phone option that can start a call or a text. Its help center adds that a plain-text number shows as a link on some devices and not others, so use the Phone option to be sure.

  1. Select the text or button you want to link and open the link editor.
  2. Choose Phone from the drop-down menu.
  3. Enter your number with its country and area code, and don’t start it with a 0.
  4. Select Call, or select Text to open a blank text message instead.
  5. Press Enter or click Save.

On Core, Plus, Advanced, Business and both Commerce plans, the mobile information bar adds a Call button to the bottom of your site on phones, using the number in your business information. Squarespace notes that the Call button won’t work while you’re logged in, so test it in a private window.

WordPress and Elementor

In the block editor, a phone link is a regular link, and WordPress lists tel:+123456789 among the link formats it accepts.

  1. Select the number in a Paragraph or Heading block, or select a button in a Buttons block.
  2. Click the Link button, or press Ctrl+K (⌘+K on a Mac).
  3. Type tel: and the number, such as tel:+13035550142, and press Enter.
  4. Save, then test the link on your phone.

WordPress checks only that a link looks like a valid URL, not that it works, so the phone test still matters.

In Elementor, any widget with a Link field, such as the Button widget, takes a phone link. Elementor’s help center says to type tel: and the complete number, without dashes or other symbols, as in its example tel:9855551212.

With Elementor Pro you can use a smart link instead: click the Dynamic icon in the Link field, choose Contact URL under Actions, then pick Tel or SMS under Contact Via and enter the number. Elementor says these usually work on mobile phones.

Duda

Duda’s Click to Call widget is a button that asks the visitor’s phone to call the number you set, and Duda recommends it for the mobile version of your site only.

  1. Add the Click to Call widget to the mobile view of your page.
  2. Open its content editor: right-click it and choose Edit Content, or in Editor 2.0 click it and use the floating menu.
  3. Type the number in the phone number field, with a + before the country code, and the text the button shows.
  4. To use the number from your Business Info instead, click the three dots on the widget’s floating bar, choose Connect to Data, select Phone Number and click Connect.

For desktop, Duda suggests a regular Button widget set to its Click To Call link option. The same Click to call option sits in Duda’s link picker, which works on text as well as buttons, so the number in your header can be a linked line of text.

Note

Once the widget takes its number from Business Info, you change the number there, not in the widget.

Test it on a phone

  1. Publish the change, then open your live site on your phone.
  2. On Squarespace, use a private or incognito window, since the mobile information bar’s Call button won’t work while you’re logged in.
  3. Tap the number. The dialer should open with the right number, area code included, and most phones ask before calling, so you can cancel.
  4. Don’t tap it over and over: Wix notes that iPhones and iPads block the call after more than three taps in a row.
  5. On a computer, hover over the number in Chrome. If the address at the bottom of the window starts with tel:, it’s a real link and not one a phone guessed, and clicking it opens a calling app, as web.dev describes.
  6. If you added an sms: link, tap it and check that a new text opens to your number.

Questions

Can a tap-to-call link dial an extension?

The tel: standard has an ext parameter for extensions, but Duda’s help center says there’s no standardized way to dial extensions automatically. Put a direct line in your header instead.

Should the number be a link on a computer too?

Yes. On a computer the link opens whatever calling app the visitor has set up, and the number stays readable for anyone who’d rather dial it from their own phone.

Where should the number go on the page?

In the header, so it shows at the top of every page. The home page checklist covers the other four parts of the page.
