What’s the best website platform for a builder or contractor?
Short answer
No platform is best for every builder, so judge them on four things: who will edit the site, what it costs each month, whether you can take it with you, and where you get help. WordPress gives you the most control, but you arrange the hosting. Wix and Squarespace include hosting and 24/7 support in their paid plans. Duda suits designers who run sites for their clients.
What builders run today
48%
In Katsa’s review of 171 builder and remodeler websites, 12% ran on Squarespace, 10% on Wix, 5% on Duda and 5% on GoDaddy. The other 20% used something else.
Popularity doesn’t settle it, so the sections below compare the four on editing, cost, control and help.
Editing: who changes the site
- WordPress builds pages from blocks, such as paragraphs, headings and buttons, in its block editor. Some sites add Elementor, a page builder for WordPress with paid Pro plans, which edits pages with its own widgets.
- Wix uses a visual editor where you add elements to the page, plus a mobile editor for the phone layout. Changes on desktop carry over to mobile, but mobile changes stay on mobile.
- Squarespace 7.1 sites adapt to phones automatically, with mobile options for Fluid Engine sections and headers. New pages and sections start from pre-built layouts that you fill with your own content.
- Duda targets designers and agencies. Its client management gives clients access to sites, with permissions the designer sets.
Cost: what each charges per month
| Platform | Entry plan on its pricing page | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress.org | Free software | You pay for a host and a domain separately |
| WordPress.com | Personal: $9 a month, or $4 a month billed yearly | Renews at $5 a month after the first year |
| Elementor Pro | Essential: $60 a year | An add-on to a WordPress site |
| Wix | Light: $17 a month | Price of a yearly plan paid in full; the free plan shows Wix branding |
| Squarespace | Basic: $25 a month, or $19 a month billed yearly | 14-day free trial |
| Duda | Basic: $25 a month, or $19 a month billed yearly | 14-day free trial; 30-day money-back guarantee on eligible plans |
We read these prices on the WordPress.com, Elementor, Wix, Squarespace and Duda pricing pages on November 4, 2026. They exclude tax and change often, so check the page before you buy.
The plan is only part of the cost. What a redesign costs covers the one-time work.
Control: can you take the site with you
- WordPress is open source under the GPLv2 license, with the freedom to run, study, change and share it. You choose the host yourself.
- Wix sites have to run on Wix’s servers. You can still keep your domain with another provider.
- Squarespace exports some content to a WordPress .xml file, but not other page types, style settings or custom CSS.
- Duda’s site export to another host comes with the Agency plan and higher. After export, the builder can’t edit the site and contact forms stop working.
Whichever you pick, the account should be in your company’s name. Who owns my website lists what to check.
Help: who answers when something breaks
- Wix: 24/7 customer care, by chat or a scheduled call.
- Squarespace: support around the clock by email, live chat and social media, but not by phone.
- Duda: email support on the Basic and Team plans, priority support from the Agency plan up and 24/7 support on custom plans, per its pricing page.
- WordPress: the WordPress.org support forums and your host. On WordPress.com, the Personal plan includes support from its own team.
How to choose
- If your site already runs on one of the four and works, fix it in place. Staying or moving covers the trade-off.
- If you’ll edit the site yourself and want hosting and support in one bill, compare Wix and Squarespace.
- If you want to choose your host and keep a full copy of the site, use WordPress.
- If a designer will run the site on Duda, agree in writing who owns the account. Duda’s transfer guide says its support doesn’t transfer sites, so a client needs the account owner to do it.
Katsa doesn’t ask you to switch. We rebuild the home page inside whichever of the four your site runs on.
Questions
Do I need Elementor to build a WordPress site?
No. WordPress’s block editor builds pages without it. Elementor is an add-on with its own price, starting at $60 a year for its Essential plan.
Can I switch platforms later?
Yes, but plan for it. A move means rebuilding pages, redirecting old addresses and often transferring the domain, which staying or moving walks through.
